PBPN Elected Official Accountability Program

Below is the Accountability Plan that was sent to the tribal council to put on the agenda for the October General Council Meeting, but they refused to put it on the agenda. It looks like our elected officials don’t want to be held accountable.

PBPN Elected Official Accountability Program

Outline of the Program is:

I. Institute a process that the Secretary's office will have an on-going calendar listing of all Tribal Council and Gaming commission daily meetings and appointments for Tribal member review.  Discretion to be used when listing names of Tribal members coming in meetings for special requests.

2. Institute a process for having each elected official do a quarterly report for distribution at each General Council meeting consisting of an actual calendar outlining their appointments and an activities report hightlighting their accomplishments

3. Institute a line item report for quarterly distribution at each General Council meeting detailing the budget usage and justification for usage by each elected official.

4.  Have each elected official provide Tribal members quarterly and distributed at each General Council meeting a forecast of their next quarter's activities for General Council review.

The on-going calendar should be in a format that all tribal members can obtain from the Secretary's office - any day of the month to oversee where the elected official is spending their time.  The quarterly calendars/accomplishment/budget usage and justification/and next quarterly forecast reports should also be in electronic format for distribution to any tribal member who makes a request.

Kansas Attorney General says that is a bad idea!

"The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation will ask a judge next month to let it join Attorney General Paul Morrison's anti-gambling lawsuit.

Morrison's "friendly" lawsuit argues that the state law allowing casinos and slot machines at racetracks is unconstitutional.

The suit move was seen as a way to get a definitive ruling on the law's constitutionality.

A spokeswoman for the Attorney General says Morrison does not want the tribe involved.

He thinks that will just slow down the process of getting a court ruling."

Air Native

Nike is coming out with the 'Air Native'   just for Native Americans. But the company said those Black Cherokees that have been kicked out of the Cherokee tribe, those Pechanga out in California that have recently been dis-enrolled because of per capita issues, those Iroquois that had their homes bull dozed awhile back, AND especially that Potawatomi guy with that one blog who is always writing about his tribal council not going to work, those people need not apply for these special native shoes!

These are words of wisdom from a tribal member that everyone has to read...

"As a tribal member who lives off the reservation it is saddening to see the shape our tribe is in. I work for the state and our behavior is laughed at by those who are not part of our reservation. They find it humorous that we attack our own leadership and in turn, can not unite over the direction we as a tribe should go. I do believe there are those who are causing problems to benefit themselves and that is shameful. The only grace I find in this situation is that my grandmother is not alive to witness their behavior. She was always very proud of where she came from and her tribe. I am not sure she would say the same if she was alive today. Tribal council needs to be able to do their job without harrassement from those who feel like they should be entitled to more. Due to this form of abuse by certain members of our tribe we have lost very educated and talented young adults who refuse to work for the tribe due to incidents such as these. We blame the white man for not hiring our tribal members, maybe we should look at ourselves and see that maybe, just maybe, our public attacks on employees are the main reason these highly educated members refuse to work on the reservation. Who wants that type of abuse on a daily basis. I am not one who likes to join a mob mentality but in this instance I believe the time has come for certain members of our tribe to grow up. The white man is not hurting us as a people you are. I hope these latest actions have opened the eyes of others who stayed silent. I believe it is time to take a stand. I am."

"Bloggers cannot be hit with libel suits on the basis of anonymous postings on their Web sites because federal law grants them immunity by explicitly stating that they cannot be treated as the "publisher" of such comments, a federal judge has ruled."

Well, I feel better! So keep sending in them anonymous comments (Or 'Name Withheld' as the tribal paper puts it!) if you are afraid of the bullies on the rez. eh!
