This article is from a local newspaper about an 'unnamed Old Potawatomi' and is called Editorial: Old Potawatomi speaks about Chief Illiniwek and Justin Neeley, a Potawatomi, from Shawnee, Oklahoma left this comment about it:
"I think even this article is insulting. I am Potawatomi. I am active in my culture and speak my language. I think that stereotypical images like this are bad for all Indian people. Notice to all of those who dont know we didnt all live in Teepee's and we didnt all wear war bonnets. This article about an old potawatomi is rediculous. It even degrades Potawatomi people. I am dang happy they didnt call their team the Potawatomi. I can tell you right now if they had I would have been all over this university for years. They claim they are honoring Indian people. Then why dont they honor Black people and call the team the Negro's or the Blackies. I am sure that would go over well with people. I mean especially if you name a school Martin Luther King school you would think it would be mandatory to name your sports team one of these names or the N word seems like the right thing to do huh."
Heyo Larry;
The Chief is history at U. of Illinois. Next... Chief Wahoo. Do you know or remember the name of the artist who made multiple copies of the cleveland indians logo and transformed them into other caricatures like "The Boston Catholics", "New York Hymies", etc.? Very effective statement against stereotyping, but I can't find his stuff on the web; at least not without his name.
