The word politics comes from the latin root "poli" meaning many and "tics" meaning blood sucking vermin. I am having fun watching the political races heat up. The candidates get to say things about each other that would put an ordinary citizen on a government watch list. The incumbents have sat back and gotten fat off the American people. Now they are telling us all the good they have done. You would think they could walk on water. Then their opponents come out with an ad that totally assassinates their character. The ads are getting quite amusing. Each candidate is accusing the other of mud slinging. The American people are saying the same thing about the ones in the race.
Some of the "issues" are also entertaining. The 700 mile fence across the Mexican border is an example. It is for national security. I don't know if they have thought out what to do with the rest of the 1300 miles. If a fence across the border will make this country safe, what about the Canadian border? Or is it only the brown people we want to keep out of this country? Couldn't the billions spent on a fence be better used to develop industry in Mexico? All the people want is to be able to make a living. The American Dream. The Statue of Liberty says give us your poor and hungry. It should be amended to say but not your Mexicans.
The war is another campaign issue. If you say anything negative about it, then you are unpatriotic. We condemn the Dixie Chicks, but laugh at Leno and Lettermans' jokes. Now the candidates are using the war as a weapon against each other. Again, the war is for national security. What about making the streets of America safe? That would be national security. If we really support veterans, why not give them the same benefits that congressmen get? or even half that. A congressman can serve one term and retire for life. A veteran can fight in a war, then have to fight his own government for benefits.
Government waste is only brought up during election years. If it is really a concern, they would do something about it. If the hundreds of millions of dollars went toward the service programs that are cut, much good could be done. The pork barrel is only a reward for the ones in office, or for the ones they are indebted to.
If we could hold our government to the promises they make during election years, this would be a better country. I plan on voting. I have for over 30 years. It is my chance to speak. It is only one vote, but I will make it. In the meantime, I am having fun watching the show.
