Native Perspective on Immigration

On our Southern Border

They cross the Rio Grande. Go across deserts. Avoid the Border Patrol.

So they can have a better life for their children.

All they have is their faith as citizens of the world

And of belonging to a church without borders.

Corporations that worship at the alter of greed and power

 want them here;

To work for two dollars an hour. Cleaning toilets. Cooking hamburgers.

Doing roofing work, doing the dirty work in meat-packing plants.

There is plenty of blame to go around on illegal immigration.

The Mexican government is tough on their Southern border

But do nothing on their Northern border.

Their social problem goes North and is not their social problem anymore.

In an election year we demonize them

But who is really getting over here?

Those illegal immigrants pay state and federal taxes

Pay into social security and get nothing in return.

They pay taxes when they buy cigarettes, buy booze,

Pay sales taxes on the clothes they buy,

Pay rent and mortgages to landlords and lenders,

Pay millions in fees to banks

 when they send money back to Mexico.

Who is really getting over here?

They gracefully put my book ad on their site.

Show and Tell

Joni Bour the Author from Oregon who wrote the Foreword to my book: "Potawatomi Tracks: The Ballad of Vietnam and Other Stories"  emailed me and said her daughter took my book to class for show and tell.

"My daughter (I sweated the whole time it was gone)- took your book to school for show and tell time to all her friends that her Mom knows someone who wrote a book with real covers, not the kind tied together with hole punches and yarn! Then to truly impress them- yeah right- that her Mom had even been given the opportunity to write something inside the book and it wasn't in purple crayon either! Oh boy they were impressed. Boy if you had shown up at the same time, a few of them would have fainted for sure."

I always knew my book would make it into the classroom.

Passing of a Potawatomi Elder

Isabelle Mak-Ke-yo Thomas
Isabelle Mak-Ke-yo Thomas, 83, of Mayetta died Saturday, April 22, 2006 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. Survivors include: 3 sons, Vernon Wahweotten and Warren Wahweotten both of Mayetta, James Lyddane of Topeka; a daughter, Linda Wahweotten of Holton; 4 sisters, Loretta Rosenthal of Cherokee, IA, Vestina Nonken of Holton, Inez Aikin of Fayetteville, GA, Jeanette Cummings of Hutchison; 12 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Drum services will be Tuesday evening, April 25, 2006 at the Dancegroud Building in Mayetta. Burial will be Wednesday afternoon in the Shipshee Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
