"just when you think you are in the 21st century, something happens that brings you back to reality. the prairie band potawatomi are getting their per caps tomorrow. so the local liquor store in the border town of mayetta has a big special running. it is a sign about 4 foot by 6 foot or so. it says 30 pack of bud for $17. and it has a big yellow spot that advertises "per cap special". damn.....i can just hear them 'and i'll throw in some whisky chief, for the rest of your land.'
the store is called the trading post. it has a hand painted picture of an indian man and woman on the front of it. it basically is a liquor store. so anyone passing through would assume the indians spend their whole per cap on booze. thats total bullshit. yes, some indians have drinking problems. i was one of them. but no way can you say that all indians drink. i resent the implications of that sign. the majority of the indians i know dont drink.
last per cap, some guys knocked on my door. they had some quick hustle going. they said they were selling beef. they would give me a fine deal on 3 coolers of packaged steaks etc for $200. i usually buy meat from the locker. i either order a whole hog or hind quarter of beef. i get more meat for my money that way. the deal they were offering really wasnt a deal at all.
it was just a ploy like the liquor stores to get the indian and his money separated. i dont even spend my money in the places that resent indians. i go where my business is appreciated. i remember the days of going to border town stores and having the clerks follow us around the entire time we were in the stores. racism is not out in the open so much anymore. it is hidden better. but it is still there. even the bank that holds our money has an attitude when we go cash our per cap checks sometimes. once one of the tellers said 'i pay my taxes'. well so do i.
i hope that our people boycott that store with the per cap special. if they gotta have something to drink, there is always places to buy it. no sense in supporting a place that openly thinks we will all run over there for a per cap special."
